A different kind of academy

Built for adults who don’t have two years to give.

Traditional routes into hairdressing were designed for school-leavers. Ours is designed for career-changers and apprentices alike — compressed, commercial, and never stretched to fill two years.

Intensive by design

Theory moves online to our digital learning environment, so every hour on site is spent on live-model practical work. Rolling cohorts of ten keep coaching personal and standards visible.

Built for working adults

Two consecutive academy days each fortnight, distance learning between, six months end to end. Retrain around a job, a family or a caring role — without giving up an income for years while you qualify.

Business skills built in

Every course carries our Commercial Resilience Module — pricing, marketing, digital booking and money management — because a qualification should come with a living attached.

Why we exist

An industry that can’t train its own future.

Hairdressing apprenticeship starts have collapsed by nearly 70% in a decade, while most high-street salons no longer turn a profit — yet demand for skilled stylists has never been stronger. The route into the trade broke. We rebuilt it.

Clwydian Academy operates as a community-focused social enterprise with a locked social mission: retraining adults in Denbighshire, Flintshire and the border region into skilled, sustainable self-employment — in a Net-Zero academy, feeding a zero-emission mobile industry. Apprenticeships sit at the heart of that mission: delivered to the Welsh framework, fully funded, and at the fastest pace the rules allow.

The name

Named for the ridge on our horizon.

The Clwydian Range rises on the eastern skyline of our home in the Vale of Clwyd — the heather-covered hills that have watched over St Asaph for centuries.

Our seal reads that ridgeline a second way: as a sweep of hair, drawn in a single flowing gesture. One line, two meanings — a place, and a craft. It’s a quiet promise that this academy belongs to North Wales, and that what we teach here is meant to be mastered, not rushed. Even at six months, nothing about the standard is fast.

Clwydian Academy — hairdressing first, and in time the wider craft and enterprise skills this region asks of us.
